Tokoname

Japan is known for its various types of products, each region specializing in a specific field. The town of Tokoname is no exception.

Ceramics, Cats and Chimneys

Ceramics production remains the mainstay of the local economy. But in addition to ceramics, one of the main manufacturing companies here is INAX.
Due to its long coastline, fishing also plays an important role in Tokoname's local economy.

There were previously about 60 kilns in Tokoname for firing pottery. Most were built in the Meiji era (19th-20th centuries). The chimneys have become an icon of the city.

After World War II, many of them were closed and dismantled. The main reason was modernization. Also at that time, the firing of kilns was regulated by the authorities in order to protect air quality, which also contributed to these changes.

Of particular note is the Tōei Kiln (陶栄窯). This is a "climbing" kiln (nobori-gama) that was built in 887 and was used until 1974. It is the largest kiln of its kind in existence
in Japan to this day. It has eight firing chambers with a 17° inclination and ten chimneys of different heights. The scale of the building is impressive. In 1982, it was recognized by the government as an important cultural asset preserved in Tokoname.

It is also worth knowing that this ceramic town gathers the most talented Japanese craftsmen. Thanks to them, Tokoname ceramics are distinguished by their precision and nobility of workmanship. Among other things, ceramic jars (e.g. for pickles), ceramic pipes, roof tiles, manekineko cats (lucky cats), cups, mugs, plates, etc. are made there. But the icon of this place was and is the Kyusu teapot.
These Japanese teapots are unique because they have an unusual shape. They are usually small in size, with a handle on the side, a lid that fits perfectly to the whole thing and a characteristic spout cut at an angle that makes it easier to pour tea.
Tea from such Kyusu from Tokoname supposedly has a unique and unrepeatable taste and aroma. Which is a breakthrough value for green tea lovers.

Tokoname has also hit theaters. "A Whisker Away" 「泣きたい私は猫をかぶる」is a 2020 animated film with fantasy elements, produced by Studio Colorido, Toho Animation, and Twin Engine. The main character Miyo Sasaki lives in the town of Tokoname, where the entire action of the film takes place. The entire scenery and action of the anime beautifully reflect the atmosphere of the town.
